How does the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework facilitate the move to the cloud? – part one.

The act of moving data to the cloud and the trip itself are both difficult. Amazon Web Services has created the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework in response to potential issues. We now offer the first of several postings that will include a detailed description of each AWS CAF perspective.

Framework for AWS Cloud Adoption: A Governance Perspective.

In a nutshell, the AWS CAF is a framework created by AWS to assist enterprises in creating and carrying out successful strategies for their cloud adoption journeys. Each perspective is intended to produce workstreams that highlight existing skill and process gaps, aid in their closure, and offer the expertise, knowledge, and abilities necessary to continue the cloud adoption journey.

One of the six key areas included in the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework is governance. The Business, People, Platform, Security, and Operations Perspectives are the other five. Each of these will be covered in a separate post. Additionally, these six key areas are split into two categories: platform, security, and operations perspectives are focused on the technological capabilities of the organization, whereas business, people, and governance perspectives are focused on the organization’s business skills.

Let’s start by concentrating on a deep-dive into the Governance emphasis area, even though all six views are equally important in establishing a successful cloud adoption journey.

How does IT governance work?

A formal framework that gives organizations a structure to make sure that IT investments serve business objectives is what Cio.com defines as IT governance. In other words, it offers a solid framework that facilitates alignment between IT strategy and business strategy.

The formal framework was created to make it easier for IT governance best practices to be adopted and to deliver measurable outcomes that contribute to attaining the goals outlined at the start of the governance adoption process.

Four principles are included in this governance perspective:

1.Portfolio administration.

The ability of the firm to match its business goals with IT initiatives, plans, and investments is the main focus of portfolio management. Additionally, it is a crucial technique for choosing which qualified present workloads should be transferred to the AWS cloud. Last but not least, this approach gives the transfer of workloads from traditional systems to cloud-based services priority.

2. Program and project management.

The goal of program and project management is to enhance organizational performance by ensuring that initiatives are finished on time and within budget. This is done by taking into account the company’s capacity to implement many projects at once. The speed of iterative changes required for a successful cloud adoption journey is too fast for the conventional Waterfall project management approaches to handle. Therefore, implementing an Agile (and Lean) project management paradigm is crucial.

3. Business performance measurement.

The ability of the organization to assess and enhance business operations in order to promote organizational success is addressed by the business performance measurement principle. The transition to the cloud gives staff the chance to pick up new skills, while also improving process automation and optimization measures for the company. KPIs are used to assess company performance and make sure cloud usage is in line with strategic goals.

4. License management.

The owners of the products must grant licenses for cloud-based systems and services. The company’s capacity to obtain, distribute, and administer these licenses is established by this premise.

Final observations on governance Perspective.

The AWS CAF’s governance is an essential component. Its function is to guarantee that enterprises’ journeys to switch from a legacy architecture to a cloud-based architecture are successful along with the other five viewpoints.

Although moving to the cloud is possible without utilizing the AWS CAF, it is not suggested to do so. In other words, cloud adoption will be a failure. Contact our specialists at contact@lcloud.guru to learn more about employing the AWS CAF to ensure a seamless transition to the cloud.
